In the spring of 2020 I felt like I didn't have a drop of creative juice in me. Leading up to the lockdown I'd been writing demos every day, and with the great shutdown I just felt like I had nothing to share. The one little chink of musical light in here was a daily practice i set up with my friend Leah who'd moved over to the Netherlands to study before the lockdown. I'd met Leah when she joined the Warhol Dervish string quartet for my album release show and her cello improvisation at the start of Wouldn't was the highlight of the night for me (you lucky subscribers can hear it over here: paperbeatscissors.bandcamp.com/track/wouldnt-live-at-theatre-outremont ). I suggested we fire some improvisations back and forth, each of us responding to the others' playing. Initially totally freeform, we starting messing around with different limitations and both found a lot of solace in the practice. This piece here is the very first improvisation. I sent Leah a piece and she responded and I combined the two tracks together. I like to add in a little field recording when I'm improvising, so that I have something to respond to, something else to focus on, so you'll hear on here some night sounds I recorded in Spain, too. Leah was just recording with her laptop mic, but I quite like the different kinds of distortion it adds. Anywho, I hope you like :)
