Rest Your Bones (original demo 2011)

about

In 2011 I was trying to get my shit together to record the first album. I was struggling with writing and decided I'd have a go at making a rule where I had to write and record a song a day (less daunting than it seems, in the worst case scenario I could literally just press record, start singing and playing and 3 minutes later I'd have a "song"). Rest Your Bones came from that little bout of creativity and remains one of the songs I've played the most (even getting a few spins from Whispering Bob Harris on the BBC back after the album release). Even typing this is a great reminder that whenever I've tried that song-a-day exercise it's always borne fruit, so I'm gonna commit to a little spate of it starting today!

Anyway, this is the oldest demo I can find of that song (rediscovered after a friend played it to me on a recent visit to the UK) and, if you know the song paperbeatscissors.bandcamp.com/track/rest-your-bones you'll hear that the structure is exactly there and the lyrics are already 75% done. Anyway, I hope you enjoy!

lyrics

REST YOUR BONES

Caught out at last for the sake of everyone
Mindless pursuits on your wall
Say what you will, you were not so innocent
You reeled me in, I'll rail you out as well

Soft wire falls, somehow cuts through all of this
The trauma you suffer will pass
In chimes a voice, talks you back inside yourself
Speaks truth to your words, repeats it:

It's been too long

Brought up too long inside...
Picking the sense from the background noise
... underground again

Rest your bones in this hole
We'll come back for you
We promise we will not leave you here
Rest your bones
